Donations

We’re Thresholds, and it’s our mission to enable children and adults with developmental disabilities, and their families, to live productive lives…right here in Kent County.  Its work we do not take lightly.  Work that can be traced back to local beginnings in 1975.  Since then, the services we provide and the number of people we are able to help continue to grow.  The vast array of disabilities our consumers are faced with, and living with, has certainly increased.

So, who are the people we speak of?  You might not see them everyday, though statistically you should.  We’re talking about mental or physical impairments.  Sometimes genetic, like Down syndrome or neurological, like Autism.  Sometimes accidental, due to head injuries or damage from other illnesses.  In general the impairments are severe, and something these folks will be living with, well, as long as they live.  These disabilities often limit mobility, learning, language and self-care, which can impact things like living independently and getting a job.  Nonetheless, this information is not intended to make you feel bad.  Or sad.  The people we help are not dying today.  They are actively engaged in making a life for themselves.  And they are not looking to be anyone’s burden.

Text Box: Make the Difference Today I know it’s not easy to ask for a contribution. It’s not always easy to give one either. But I believe the work you’re doing is worthy my financial support. Today I am donating $_________ to this effort. Name _____________________________________________________________ Address ____________________________________________________________ City ________________________________ State ___________ Zip ___________ Method of Donation: o Visa o MasterCard o Check enclosed payable to Thresholds Card number ________________________________ Exp Date _______________ Signature ___________________________________________________________ Now you know something about the people we help.  Maybe someone in your own family.  Maybe not.  But a former classmate or neighbor.  Probably.  There is still plenty of uneasiness out there when it comes to the subject of disability, we know, but we don’t have much time to worry about perceptions.  We are not the most visible organization you’ll support, but we will change people’s lives.  Independent living not institutional care.  A job, a paycheck, a contribution back to the community.  A choice.  Eighty-six percent of all the donations we receive go directly into our programs and services.  That means even a small contribution can buy someone a lot of freedom.  Keeping things moving forward.  It is up to you.
